On January 16th 2020, Students of English Department, under the supervision of Assistant Lecturer Roshna Ahmed Mohammed, held a workshop about Romantic Poetry. Using practical and theoretical approaches of analysing poetry students tackled the major features of romanticism and romantic poetry. The group as whole were involved in the procedures of discussing the texts of different poems.
English Department in cooperation with English Access Institute presented a workshop, entitled "Teaching a Better English Class", on November 28th, 2019. The workshop was used to introduce English Department Students to "Teaching English Socially" by Ms.Mistu Gunsolus, "Teaching English Developmentally" by Mr.Christopher Johnson, and "Teaching English Academically" by Dr. Jalal Sadullah.
The thesis seminars were under different titles by M.A students of both literature and linguistics. The first seminar was presented by Zainab Hashim Majedd entitled A pragma-linguistic Study of Invitation and Intimidation in Selected English and Arabic Religious Sermon . The study focuses on the notion of invitation and intimidation expression and how they are used in both Arabic and English religious communities on linguistic,pragmatic, rhetorical and literary level.
The Second seminar was presented by Drivan Jalal entitled Socio-Ecological Transformation in Science-Fiction: An Ecocritical Study of Frank Herbert's Dune and Joan Slonvzewski's A Door into Ocean . It tackles environmental themes in science fiction genre of literature. It examines the ways people both as individuals and communities respond to changes in their environment on the one hand, and how they adopt their personal life styles and social systems to preserve their planet on the other hand.The third Seminar was presented by Sherko Yunis entitled A Sociolinguistic Analysis of Offensive Expression in Selected English and Arabic Movies. The study demonstrates a sociolinguistic analysis of the offensive expression in movies extracted from the American version entitled Deadpoll 2 and the Arabic version under the title Awlad Rizq
The fourth seminar was presented by HIba Abdul-Satar Mahdi entitled In-Yer-Face Theatre: A Psychoanalysis Study of Sarah Kane's Five Plays. In-Yer- Theatre is a style of drama that emerged in Great Britain in 1990s. This term is coined by Aleks Seirz to describe works by young playwrights who present Vulgar, Shocking, and confrontational material on stage as a means of involving and affecting the audiences.
In 17th of May, 2018, English department held a fruitful symposium entitled How to improve you English language, the participants shared heavy deals of topics including the challenges, certain problems, recommendations for enhancing the fluency of English learners. The presenters displayed the major obstacles in the terms of grammar, pronunciation, writing, reading & comprehension, and other serious issues. At the end the audience raised lots of useful points to be discussed and it lasted for more than 80 minutes.For more details ....Symposium
